Katrina Buckhold, the Heroine of “The Traz” by Eileen Schuh

What is your story?
My story is THE TRAZ by Eileen Schuh. Actually, that is just the beginning of my story. It will take the entire BackTracker series to do my life justice.

Who are you?
I am Katrina Buckhold

Where do you live?
I live in Canada. I spent my early childhood in the Arctic but the rest of my life is spent in Alberta.

Are you the hero of your own story?
I am a heroine, a protagonist, but I’m always battling Shrug for top billing. He thinks he’s the hero — the most important person in the BackTracker series. He thinks I wouldn’t be alive without him. He’s an idiot.

What is your problem in the story?
Shrug.

Do you have a problem that wasn’t mentioned in the story?
People think I have lots of problems, but they’re idiots. I know what I’m doing. I can survive quite well on my own, thank you.

Do you embrace conflict?
There are those who say I create conflict. Those are people who are always looking for someone else to blame for their lives — like Shrug.

How do you see yourself?
I see myself as someone who doesn’t give a shit about how others see me.

How do your friends see you?
Shrug tells me I’m manipulative, abrasive and self-centred. Chad believes I’m hurting and vulnerable.

Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?
Oh, yeah. She had no choice. I’ll have you know — I control the keyboard.

Do you have any special strengths?
I am of genius intelligence and have been on the cutting edge of computer and cyberspace technologies from the time I was four.

Do you have money troubles?
I’m wealthy — having not only inherited a sizeable estate, but having also received life-insurance payouts in the millions. What do dollars mean, though, when you’ve lost all whom you love?

What do you need?
I need to be loved by a man with deep brown, liquid eyes. He knows who he is.

What, if anything, haunts you?
That dark October night in the metal shed on the vast Alberta prairie. Gator — I’ll hate you forever.

Has anyone ever betrayed you?
Shrug betrayed me. My mother betrayed me. She killed my dad, you know. And we won’t mention the Coopers. I learned early to rely on my own wits for survival.

Have you ever betrayed anyone?
Only people you trust can betray you. Ummm…nobody trusts me.

What is your favorite scent?
Autumn. The smell of autumn. Perhaps because of memories of hunting with my Grandpa. He taught me great things. He liked me. He listened to me.

What is your favorite beverage? Why?
Root Beer. Because it tastes good, duh.

Name five items in your purse, briefcase, or pockets.
My Mensa membership card and four $100 bills.

If you were stranded on a desert island, who would you rather be stranded with, a man or a woman?
The only woman I ever got along with was my Grandma Buckhold, so I suggest if you don’t want an island murder, you better make damned sure it’s a man you put with me.

How do you envision your future?
I’m going to rule the world…just wait and see. My father foresaw my greatness and I will not let him down.

LOVE this! I read it after meeting Katrina – twice and still learned a lot and took away a better sense of her character and, almost surprisingly, of Eileen.

    Thanks for sharing.
